Children and Young People

In the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Alliance area, our Strategic Objective 4 aims to prevent children and young people from starting to smoke or vape.

Our activities around this include

  • INTENT programme, a smoking and vaping prevention education programme which can be delivered in secondary schools. The target audience is 11-15 year olds and the materials include helping children to develop a plan of action for what they would do or say if offered a cigarette / vape.  Find out more about INTENT
  • Working at a system level to promote consistent messages around vaping to young people, by all the partners who might come into contact with them. If you would like more information please contact us.
  • Provision of quit support:
    • Our stop smoking services will see any local smoker aged 12+ who wants to stop. Professional Referral - Your Health Nottinghamshire
    • Our substance misuse services will support any young person aged 12+ to stop using illegal substances in vapes. Nottinghamshire referrals | Change Grow Live
    • We are developing a new pilot on provision of stop vaping support for aged 12+. This will be initially focused on selected Notts schools.
    • The 12+ cut off for all the above services applies because Nicotine Replacement Therapy is only licensed for use with people aged 12 and over. We are unable to provide these services for children aged 11 and under.
  • Working with Trading Standards teams to prevent underage sales of tobacco products and vapes. If you’d like to know more about this work, read our case study.
